Here is a nice Antique Hammered Dulcimer for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it on a pickers trip (yup, just like Frank and Mike) to New England. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
Beautiful Antique Hammered Dulcimer or Zither for you collectors/players out here. Not sure whom the maker was. The construction of the piece would say that it probably dates to the 1850s to 1880s period. Cannot see a makers name on the dulcimer (cheesecloth across the 2 sound holes to keep dirt out, so cannot see anything in there). We would say American made based upon the wood and other materials used, but just our best guess, you be the final judge before acquiring.
There are gold colored numbers on the soundboard on both sides of the taller bridge. Black paint on the soundboard has flaked or worn off in some places. Both bridges look intact, no cracks or repairs. There are 12 clusters of 3 strings each on the dulcimer,so 36 strings in total. Old strings, just like the dulcimer so expect they will need to be replaced.
Beautiful outer frame around the perimeter of the soundboard. A few of the tacks that hold the soundboard in place are not there. No playing hammers or tuning wrenches came with this instrument. All the pins the strings are strung from seem to still be securely in place. No splits or repairs to the sound board or outer dulcimer frame. The back board is two pieces of knotty pine wood, some shrinkage splitting to them.
The Antique Hammered Dulcimer is 5" tall, by 50-5/8" across, by 16" wide. This musical instrument is not represented to be in playing condition. There will need to be refurbishing done to make this instrument playable again. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
