Here is a nice Hamilton Model #22 Chronometer from the World War II era or right after for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself.
A client had committed to buy this piece back at the end of 2018 and had to cancel after experiencing health issues. Then we forgot to relist the item, so available again for your buying advantage!
Beautiful 1940s Model #22 Chronometer here from Hamilton of Lancaster, PA. This is referred to as the size 35 I understand. This chronometer was made in the 1940s. Very uncommon to obtain both the inner and outer cases. Most of the outer cases got separated from the rest of the unit once it started to be used.
Would guess that made sometime just after 1944. They also switched to just saying Hamilton on the face, instead of Hamilton Watch Co. about this time. Cannot say if was used in World War II, or if this was a surplus item.
The serial number on the movement is 2F27306. The movement case has the serial number of 13544 etched into it. The latches on both the top and the lower part of the case operate.
There are a couple of opening of the seams on the top of the outer case. Also has the remnants of the leather strapping on the outer case as well. Some loss of finish to the outer case on the front. The latch and eye screw on the outer case are in place. The metal tags are on both the inner and outer cases.
Some minor finish loss to the finish on the brass gimbal that holds the movement and some finish loss on the movement body. The two hinged bodies of the case are securely attached to the base. Green felt on the bottom of the case to protect it and on the inside of the outer case which is in good condition.
The glass over the brass movement and in the case is intact, no cracking or blistering. Clean looking movement, see pics. This is what is referred to as a gimbal mounted chronometer. The locking pin for the gimbal is in place and operates as expected. The movement is 21 jewels as noted on the back of the movement. The clock is in running condition, and the wind spring feels sound when wound. The movement has the number "2F27306". The wind strength meter works as expected when movement is wound. Very clean looking dial on this chronometer.
The maker's label is on the front of the inner case. Also, the label is inside the middle section of the inner case, just below the glass. Other items that you might see in the pics are not included, only the Hamilton 22 Chronometer and two cases described here.
The inner chronometer case is 6" tall, by 6" across, by 6" wide. The clock face is 2-3/8" across. The outer case is 7-7/8" tall, by 10-13/16" across, by 8-13/16" wide.
