Here is a great Antique French Figural Clock for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion or keep for yourself! Nice project/restoration clock for the right person out there.
What really makes this clock unique are the bronze plaques on the side of the clock case. There are embossed images of a chariot, warriors and an elephant on the plaques. Have never seen this on a Marti clock that we have acquired over the past 35 years. Also, there is also an interesting picture of a movement on the face and then impressed on the movement that we have not seen before. Has "B" and "D" in the top two corners of the emblem. Research shows that stands for Bawo & Dotter.
Beautiful mantel clock here made in France. The maker was L Marti (a lot fewer of L than Samuel Marti clocks on the market). The clock dates to the late 1800s. Has a beautiful brass French movement and then two bronze plaques and then the slate case. The elegant hour hand is still on the clock, the minute hand is gone. The face is made of porcelain, the gold grommets are in place. No hairlines or cracks in the porcelain face that we can ascertain. The front and rear bezels are on hinges and attached to the clock case. Both still secured well. The glass is intact and beveled in the front door. This unique looking clock probably dates to the latter 1800s period.
The case is made of slate. Some chipping of the case on the bottom left (2 places), top middle, back top left of the slate case. The bottom wood board that the wire gong is affixed to has a crack in it.
Have oiled the rear pivot points on the back movement of the clock. The clock will hold a beat and strikes the hours, but with no pendulum cannot tell if running or not. The suspension spring is also not in place. Both springs feels sound when keyed. There is no pendulum that comes with this clock. The clock will come with a newer wind key. This is a time and gong wire strike clock. The clock strikes strikes the number of hours on the hour.
This clock's movement has not been serviced and is being sold in not running condition. This clock will be going out to the Clock Doc for servicing if one of you does not acquire it soon.
The movement has a L Marti impressed silver medal medallion on it in the center behind the bell. There is also an interesting picture of a movement on the face and then impressed on the movement that we have not seen before. May have been the jeweler that sold the clock. On the right side of the movement is the number "2420" impressed on it.
The clock stands 8-3/8" tall, by 13.75" across, by 8.25" wide. The clock face is 3-3/8". Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.
As can be expected when dealing with an antique clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it.
Make sure that this clock meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. The item can be returned, there is a 10% restocking fee to do so. So, please carefully review all the attached pictures, ask all the questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it. The clock will be partially disassembled to more safely ship it to you. So, expect to have to do some re-assembly. Don't be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions!
