Check out this antique violin bow that I recently picked up at an auction for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
The shaft appears the bow is made of pernam - buco wood. Has a round shaft and then octagonal by frog. What makes this violin bow unique is the violin bow transitions from the octagonal to round shaft. Smaller by frog and then widens out. You can see what looks like an arrow mark on the top of bow, opposite the side the frog is on. There also appears to be a small 1/20" hole drilled thru the shaft with a pin or something else in it, about and inch to left of where the transition takes place. You can see the one end of hole and pin in pic #4. Also, the winding is down further on the bow then one typically sees. Not loose where it is located, so not sure what this is all about.
Some loss of the finish along the shaft. Nice looking frog on it. The bow has no cracks, splits or repairs to the wood that I can see to report to you. A few nicks along the shaft, but nothing of consequence. The is no mark of maker or country of origination on this bow. The bow still has a great finish on it. Good camber. Strong flex to the shaft and I can ascertain no warping, splits or repairs to report to you. Nice silver colored metal winding on the bow, then a black leather strap holding it securely in place on one side. Beautiful tip on this violin bow as well.
Nice mother of pearl inlays on the sides of the frog and along the bottom. Piece on bottom is jutting out on one side. Silver colored end screw with ebony end. The bow is 29-1/8" (736.6mm) long. The bow weighs 2.2 ounces (60 grams) with no horse hair on it. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
