Here is a nice old antique violin for your buying consideration for restoration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
Beautiful looking violin here. There is a maker's label saying this is a W&S Violin from Leipzig Germany. The label is on very old paper. The "W" seems to stand for Wunderlich from what we have researched. Any assistance in figuring out the rest of the label would be appreciated. The violin probably dates to the 1870s to 1890s period.
The violin has a twp piece belly and one piece back. The violin has a nice dark reddish brown stain on it. Nice arching on the belly. There are a few hairline cracks, or splits on the soundboard/belly of the violin that will need some attention. Most noticeable one is to the left of the neck above the upper bout. Some buildup of old rosin on the belly. No issues where the sound post makes contact with the belly and back of the violin. See the pictures. Beaks look good on the violin. Some discoloration and staining to the finish on the soundboard. Some paint speckling on the top sides of the violin, did not attempt to remove. No strings come with this violin.
Beautiful one piece back to the violin. No cracks or repairs to the back to report to you. This violin awaits your refurbishing efforts.
The sound post is not in place (rolling around inside the violin), the beaks are beautiful and intact, some minor wear to the ends. The violin is still soundly glued together on the sides except the back down near the lower bout and bottom of the violin. Some hairlines to the side along one of the beaks that will need some attention. The graining on the violin, along with the varnish give it a great look. Nice tiger striping on the back of the violin, back wood is most likely a maple. F holes are very intricately carved as is the scrolling at the top of the neck. The violin has inlaid wood purfling on both the belly and the back. Saddle and end peg are in place as is the tailpiece. The nut is not in place.
Nice ebony key board on the violin with no ridging where the strings made contact with it. The end peg, bridge, tail piece, and sound post are with the violin. The 4 tuning pegs are with the violin (only 3 showing in pics, all 4 are there). Neck and fingerboard are attached to the body of the violin. Bridge is missing a leg.
The violin is 22-7/8" long in total, 14" long by the body, 8" wide by lower bout, and 6-5/8" by the upper bout. The violin comes with an older hard case.
This musical instrument is not represented to be in playing condition. There will need to be major refurbishing to the violin to make the instrument playable again (examples - repairs to hairlines on bellyetc). Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
