Here is a nice old antique violin for your buying consideration for restoration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
Beautiful looking violin here. There is a maker's label saying this is from a Garpate Da Soto an in Bregna. The label is on very old paper and the writing in ink is very light, so the letters may not have been captured correctly. The only Bregna we can locate is from the kingdom of Carpathia. Cannot find this violin maker. Any assistance in figuring out the actual lettering on the label would be appreciated.
The violin has a one piece belly and two piece back. The violin has a nice dark brown stain on it. Nice arching on the belly. There are a few hairline cracks, or splits on the soundboard/belly of the violin that will need some attention. Two of the hairlines emanate out from each side of the saddle. No issues where the sound post makes contact with the belly and back of the violin. See the pictures. Beaks look good on the violin. Some discoloration and staining to the finish on the soundboard and back probably much from someone not wiping the rosin off and it melting in place from heat while stored.
Beautiful two piece back to the violin. No cracks or repairs to the back to report to you.
The sound post is in place (no guarantee it will stay up during shipping), the beaks are beautiful and intact, some minor wear to the ends. The violin is still soundly glued together as are the sides to the soundboard and back. The graining on the violin, along with the varnish give it a great look. Nice tiger striping on the back of the violin, back wood is most likely a maple. F holes are very intricately carved as is the scrolling at the top of the neck. The violin has inlaid wood purfling on both the belly and the back.
Nice ebony key board on the violin with no ridging where the strings made contact with it. The end peg, bridge, tail piece, and sound post are with the violin. 4 tuning pegs are with the violin and 3 match. The other one has a mother of pearl end piece on it. Tuner peg box is intact, no cracks or repairs. Neck is securely attached to the body of the violin.
The violin is 23=5/16" long in total, 14-1/16" long by the body, 8.25" wide by lower bout, and 6-5/8" by the upper bout. The violin comes with an older hard case.
This musical instrument is not represented to be in playing condition. There will need to be major refurbishing to the violin to make the instrument playable again (examples - repairs to hairlines on belly, resurface or replace ebony neck, etc).
