Wow, here is a great French Empire Mantel Clock for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
Quite an interesting clock here. Movement was made by FC (in cursive on the movement) of France. The clock was probably made in the mid 19th to 1870s period.
Beautiful mahogany case on this clock. Beautiful fluted columns that hold the movement above the base. Brass trim and end plates on each column. Check out the great inlay on the front and top of the base. No splits, cracks, repairs or missing pieces to the wood case. Only exception is a split in the wood on the back side of the piece above the columns. The wood case certainly shows wear along the edges, especially along the thin top trim pieces and wear along the edges of the base. Wood legs on base of clock look original to case.
Great looking white enamel clock face. No hairlines or flaking paint. The clock face has black roman numerals on it. The name of the jeweler who sold the clock is on the face, "Bailey & Kitchen, Philadelphia". The face of the clock does not have the clock maker's name on it. Beautiful metal golden trim with what appears to be a grapevine with oak leaf design on it. That design carries over to the ornately detailed pendulum bob on this clock. The clock has black colored hands which match and look appropriate to the clock.
The clock has a spring wound movement, with both spring encased in brass drums. Both springs feel sound when keyed. The clock is in running and striking condition. The clock will come with a wind key. The movement looks original to the case. Beautiful bell strike on this clock. Strikes once on the half hour and the number of hours on the hour.
The clock is in running, and striking condition. The clock stands 19-5/16" tall, by 10-7/16" across, by 6-1/16" wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. The clock may be partially disassembled to more safely ship it to you. So, expect some reassembly.
As can be expected when dealing with an antique clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it.
The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.
