We were just able to pick up a number of books and prints/posters that were in the personal collection of a book store owner from PA whom is no longer with us. These items will be posted in our store over the next few days.
Very nice set of the writings of Oliver Wendell Holmes (not his son, the Supreme Court Justice) for you here. There are 13 volumes and are a complete set of this edition. These books are a first edition of these books in this format. The books were printed in 1894 by the Houghton Mifflin Company, Riverside Press. These books were put out in the year that Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. passed.
Each book has a beautiful polished red calf leather marbled hardcovers. The front and back covers are getting loose from the rest of the book along the spine hinges. 4 books have hardcovers on one side that have come loose from the book, still with it (including volume 1). Some wear to the covers at the edges.
The title of the book, "The Writings of Oliver Wendell Holmes", and volume number are noted in gold gilt and impressed into the spine as well. The spines' covering is there on all the books. One appeared to have been glued back together at some juncture. The top side of the open pages are done in gold gilt, not the bottom and sides.
No foxing or brown spotting. Some minor soiling in places. The book's pages are all intact, no tears, missing pages, or repairs. The books' pages are still well bound. A dusty smell to them. Some pencil writing on one of the front blank pages. Just above that is printed "Bound by Blackwell for Brentano's". So, the books may have been rebound at some juncture or original notation?
Each book is 8" tall, by 5-7/16" across, by approximately 1.25" wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
Some information about the author from the internet;
"Holmes was with us from 1809 to 1894. Holmes is one of the Fireside Poets, together with William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and John Greenleaf Whittier. These poets—whose writing was characterized as family-friendly and conventional—were among the first Americans to build substantial popularity in Europe. Holmes in particular believed poetry had "the power of transfiguring the experiences and shows of life into an aspect which comes from the imagination and kindles that of others"
Although mainly known as a poet, Holmes wrote numerous medical treatises, essays, novels, memoirs and table-talk books. His prose works include topics that range from medicine to theology, psychology, society, democracy, sex and gender, and the natural world. Author and critic William Dean Howells argued that Holmes created a genre called dramatized (or discursive) essay, in which major themes are informed by the story's plot, but his works often use a combination of genres; excerpts of poetry, essays and conversations are often included throughout his prose."
