Here is a nice Antique German Cuckoo Clock that is running and striking as expected for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!
Wow folks, these beauties do not come to the market very often. Here is a nice pine and walnut wood case Cuckoo Clock here. Was made by the American Cuckoo Clock Company of Philadelphia, PA. Beautiful detailing to the leaf carvings on the clock case. Nice eagle topper on this clock as well. Is affixed to the case with 2 wire hooks and then presses on to two tacks on the front of the case. The two side doors and their latches are still on the clock. The pieces to the case are all there, some finish loss. The left wing of the eagle and the right side of the topper were broken and glued back together sometime in the past. See pics and zoom in on topper pic from front and back. Great looking leaf pendulum and wood shaft.
Some information about this maker's clock from folks on the internet; "The American Cuckoo Clock Company was a company that imported the Craftsmen from Germany to manufacture the cuckoo clocks here in the United States as so many of the delicate cases were arriving damaged in transit at the time. Read more about this type of clock in Rick Ortenburger's book, Black Forest Clocks. This clock is no longer available.
So, not sure if they assembled the clock in the USA or just distributed the finished clock after having been made in Germany.
We would estimate that this clock dates to the latter 1890s to early 1900s. Some of the paper label is still on the back of the clock case.
Nice looking clock face on this clock. Wood with applied composite numbers held in place by small tacks. The clock hands match and look appropriate to the clock.
Nice older brass movement here. "Made in Germany" is on the back plate at the bottom middle. The clock movement does have a nice beat to it when wound and sitting on a wall. Most likely a 1 day movement.
The paper bellows are still intact, probably brittle. But do look to have been replaced in the recent past, not original. We typically replace with a thin leather product if blown, and something you may want to consider in the future. That option lasts much longer. Sometimes you need to put a penny on the wood end to give it enough weight to compress that material and get the appropriate sound.
The gold colored metal chains for the pine cone weights are in place and seem solid. The metall pine cone weights look good, no dings or repairs. The nicely colored bird comes out when the door opens as expected when running on the wall. So, selling this Cuckcoo clock in running and striking condition.
The Antique Cuckoo Clock Case stands 19.75" (15.5" w/o topper) tall, by 15.25" across, by 8" wide. Obviously the clock is "taller with the weights hanging from the cables, so keep that in mind when picking a spot for the clock. The clock face is 5-7/8" across. The clock will be partially disassembled to more safely ship it to you. So, expect some reassembly. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
As can be expected when dealing with an antique clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it.
