Here is a great piece of surveying equipment for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!
Beautiful antique transit here that was well taken care of. Was made by the P Orr & Sons Ltd. company of Madras, India. Two Scotchmen moved to India in the late 1850s to set the company up. This transit with compass probably dates to the 1920s to 1930s. Still has a nice finish on the transit itself.
The glass lenses appear to all be intact, no cracking or blistering. No dents or dings to the transit body or the body of the scope. The black enamel paint has flaked off the arm exposing that they are brass as well. A heavy piece here. The three brass adjusting screws to level the instrument all move freely. The two balancing level bubbles on top still have their fluid and bubbles in them. Same with the small circular leveling bubble on the base of the piece.
The compass that is sat below the sighting device is intact. The glass over the compass is in place over the compass, no cracking or blistering of the glass. The lock switch works on the compass needle. Compass needle moves freely to north position when unlocked.
There are a couple of numbers on the side of the base of the transit. One is "45" and on the other side of the beam is "4/1945". The number "12" is also on the bottom of the base of the piece.
The knob that adjusts the focus on the top on the transit still operates the piece. Interestingly, this piece is unique in that the larger end piece is moved by the knob as compared to more commonly that the eye piece is moved. There is no wood case for the transit.
The transit is 7.5" tall, by 15" long, by 5-7/8" wide. There is No transit tripod or carrying case that comes with this transit. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
