Here is a great Vintage Aquatint by Raoul Varin of a retrospective 1831 Baltimore landscape first issued in 1931 for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!

This Vintage Aquatint is one of a 150 limited edition proof set put out by the artist Raoul Varin and the publisher, Ackerman. The piece is pencil signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. This is not a facsimile signature. The artist was with us from 1865 to 1943. The aquatint was done as an 1831 retrospective scene of Whetstone Point in Baltimore. The aquatint was printed by A Ackermann & Son of New York in 1931. The aquatint appears to be hand colored based upon a close loupe review of the piece.

This is a very uncommon and rare aquatint by this artist as subject was Baltimore, most of his work was retrospective ones of Chicago and New York. Framed and matted by the Purnell Art Gallery at 104 Charles St. in Baltimore, MD, per what on back of the frame. We have another one of Varin's Baltimore signed Aquatint Proof that we have in a matching frame for sale separately in our store. See listing # 112348636167 to view that piece. Neat history of the piece typed long ago on the back paper of the other frame. Back paper is pretty intact.

The aquatint does shows some waviness as not laid down properly when first framed. So, that will need some attention. The aquatint has a great black and gold reverse painted glass around the aquatint that acts gives the look of a matting. No tears, repairs or watermarks to the piece.

Great coloring and details to the piece to the aquatint. Some push in marks down by the title underneath the aquatint, not punctured.

We do no see any foxing or brown spotting going on within the aquatint. No watermarks, tears, or repairs. Some waviness in the aquatint from not being pressed down flat that needs some attention. Aquatint shows appropriate condition for being almost 87 years old.

Beautiful wood frame here. Nice graining and three layer look to it. Some separation at the corners, the frame is still structurally sound. There is no paper matting, this is reverse painted glass made to look like a matting. The glass is intact, no cracking or blistering. The hanging wire is on the frame and the piece is sealed up from the back.

The Framed and Signed Raoul Varin Aquatint is 25-5/8" tall, by 31.5" across, by 5/8" wide. The Engraving showing thru the frame is 18" tall by 26" across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.

Some information about the engraver from the internet;

Raoul Varin was a French engraver who exhibited in the Salon of French Artists and received an honorable mention in 1892. He engraved a variety of signed, limited edition numbered prints, principally New York City and Chicago views, in the 1920s and 1930s. They were published by A. Ackermann & Son, a British publisher, with offices in Paris, Chicago and New York. His views took a historical perspective, generally showing the cities in the 19th century, often based on extant classic works.
