Here is a nice antique book about the Fables of La Fontaine for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
This is a first edition book based upon the research I have done. The book was published by Cassell, Petter and Galpin of London/New York. There is no notation in the book of the year it was published. It appear to have been published in 1870 from what I have researched online. The book was translated into English verse by Walter Thornbury.
There are 86 magnificent full page illustrations, plus many small illustrations. Illustration on page 25 has a small tear on the bottom of the page, all still there. The page edges are gold gilt colored on all three sides.
The book's condition is as follows; The front and back boards are 3/4 black morocco over a red pebbled cloth hard cover. The front and back covers are attached to rest of the book. The book is securely bound together. There is some wear to finish along the spine and corners. Spine cover is securely attached on the book. No foxing or brown spotting going on. Some pencil marks in the front of the book. Slight to moderate rubbing to the front and back covers. There are no missing, ripped, or repaired pages. The title of the book is still clearly legible in gold lettering on the spine. The front cover is a little loose from the spine, but not pulled off of it. Some wear and a small piece of the page missing that has LaFontaine's image on it at the front of the book.
The book is 12-5/8" tall, by 10-3/8" across, by 2-5/8" wide. The book is about 840 pages in length. There is no musty or mildewy smell to the book. There may be a hint of good old tobacco, not filtered, smell to it. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.
