This is a consignment item from a friend of a friend's mother who was a collector; unfortunately, she did not leave behind any messages about provenance for this Teddy bear. Clues indicate manufacture of around the 1920s to 1930s, possibly earlier. Features to consider:
*fur is mohair, which is rather stiff and somewhat prickly than soft or plush like today's toy bears.
*smaller feet, skinny arms
*Head swivels, arms and legs move. he can sit or have straight legs (popular 1930s England...)
*his nose is a metal stud that is shaped/stamped to look like a nose
*seamed head (from ears down and around nose and back)
* the back of his head has (princess) seams from ears to neck
*large ears: 2.25" across, 1.5 from center of ear to head
*The body is seamed down the center front, the center back and with side seams.
*He has a circular disc approximately 1" across under the skin on his back, located 2" up from his bum seam
*the legs have single seams, placed right up the center front of each leg
*arm's seams single, placed to the back
*His head is quite hard; his body is more squishy (huggable)
3" from the tip of the head to shoulder
8.25" tip of head to bottom of crotch
11.75" to 12" tall from tip of head to bottom of feet
4.5" arm length
1.75" foot bottom (toe to heel)
Condition: he has been a much loved companion: he is quite well worn. there are khaki pads on his hands and feet: look like hand stitched/mended.
From "The Antique Trader", this background about Teddy bears was gathered:
"In 1888, McLoughlin Brothers published “The Three Bears.” There are three different-colored prints that show a small stuffed teddy bear: one in the kitchen while Goldilocks is getting porridge, one in Baby Bear’s bed and one in a small wagon during a walk with the three bears. The prints were made 15 years before Steiff created the first documented teddy bear. This suggests there were “homemade” teddy bears in existence as early as the late 1800s."
