Lovely vintage bent wood slat picnic basket with attached hinged lid.
The wood top (which is 3/8" thick) measures: 20" x 12", the basket tapers slightly to the base.
It is 9" deep and has 24" bent wood handles.
This sturdy, solid basket is made of woven thin wood strips with a bottom that is strengthened with extra slats inside and out.
Age: we're not certain. We do know that our folks had one of these in the 1950s, but most likely it was from earlier as they courted (and did a lot of picnic-ing) in the very late 1930s and early 1940s (they were married in 1941). In the 60s, we got a new one that (of course) was made ( in part) of modern plastics.
Condition: originally this has an elastic strip that was nailed to the inside of the lid to hold flatware: that is gone, but the row of nails remains. On the front of the basket, two rows down is the number "61" (or "19" upside down) which measures about 3/4" x 3/4"; it looks like a grease pencil mark, possibly. Also, in the top row in the corner, one of the slats has a little part missing, however, it is nailed above it, and is sturdy. And finally, on the back side, 3 rows down: there is a "wrinkle" in the wood slat. This was done during the manufacturing process, but since it is not a straight slat, we felt we should mention it.
The vintage table cloth is not included.
Picnics are a marvelous way to reconnect with your family, or your significant other: make it simple with just a pretty tablecloth, a couple of plates and a selection of cheeses and fruits, or for a more extravagant spread, this can be your separate carry-all for your linens and/or place settings.
In the fall, grab a couple of cozy woolen blankets to bring along, as you make a day of picking apples and antiques, and sip on some soup from a vintage thermos to go along with your thick pastrami on rye sandwich, all packed in your vintage picnic basket.
We've added an image of a tailgating basket, but it's much newer than this lovely classic.
And just think, what a fantastic theme gift that sort of combination would make, too. If you know someone who loves vintage, packing a picnic basket with vintage goodies is a fantastic way to make a memorable gift for them.
