We've been collecting for many years, and one of the genres we were particularly fond of was the Mid Century Modern and subsequent kitsch movements of decor.
This ceramic lamp falls into the kitsch department, with an Oriental theme, featuring two figurines, one reading at one end, and the other playing a musical instrument at the other end.
Colors are a light lime green of the base, with accents of red, black and cream, with shiny gold painted trim.
Motifs include dragons and the red dot, signifying Japanese, on the backs of the Coolie hats. The base, most likely, represents a traditional house boat, or possibly a Chinese Junk.
There is an indented bowl at the top center; many household wares incorporated ashtrays into their design structure, since smoking was so popular back then. Having said that, we don't know if this was used as an ashtray, it certainly is in excellent condition with no stains or chips or flaws.
The bulb is a small one, it fits under the center section. It has a turn switch, and it does work.
Measurements: 13" across by 4.5" deep and 6" tall
This weighs about 3 # without packaging.
The back corner is stamped 1954-55 Premco Mfg, Chicago, ILL pre-glaze.
The only issue on this is some old tape residue on the back by the switch; we have not tried any WD40 or GooGone on it yet.
We love interesting lamps like this to liven up a guest bedroom or to have in our home office, but they're really terrific if you have an entire room (or home!) filled with 1950s furnishings and collectibles.
