This lovely sculpted dress is trimmed with fancy black braided trim around the jewel neckline, and features a sleek silhouette, close to the body, and then gradually flaring to a flattering hem.
Label: Malcolm Starr, by Elinor Simmons, who designed for the line from the early 60s through 1972 (thanks to the Vintage Fashion Guild for this background information).
Labeled a (vintage) size 12, the measurements are more that of a current size 6 to 8 and it may be petite proportioned, as it is only 15.5" from the center back of the neck to the waistline, which sits above the natural waistline on our mannequin.
Measurements of the dress are:
15.5" shoulder point to shoulder point
15.5" long from center back of the neck to the waist
42.75" long from center back of the neck to the hem
70" sweep of hem
The bodice is lightly gathered across the waistline seam, rather than darted. This zips up the back with a YKK zipper: metal pull, nylon teeth.
Fully lined. No fiber lable, but feels like wool (crepe).
Heavy: this weighs 1# 12 oz without packaging
Little black dresses like this can be successfully worn from day to night: slip a jacket over it for the office, and wear it without (or with a silk shawl) for dinner. Classics like this can also be worn with a comfortable, low kitten heel, or with gorgeous high heels, too.
Often times dresses of this style were originally part of an ensemble, either with a matching jacket, or, a longer matching evening coat.
Condition is excellent, no flaws, ready to wear.
We have lightened our photographs (a LOT) to try to show the details better. This is a rich, deep, dark shade of black, it is not faded or washed out at all.
