This charming wall hanging hints at nursery rhyme inspirations, as it is a little boy holding an owl (or possibly a stylized bouquet of roses??) sitting on a moon like ring, with mouth open as if to sing, and a bird on a branch with mouth open as well.
This is a creamy ivory tone with a satiny finish; there is a little metal (3/8") hoop on the back to hang on a wall. The boy is dressed in a huge collared top with enormous bell sleeves; he wears boots and a wide-brimmed hat with a plume.
There is a bit of gilding on the owl, the leaves of the branch, and for accents along his boots, sleeve, hat, & feather; between his collar, and along the birds beak. The boys cheeks have a coral blush to them, his lips are pink, his eyes blue with little black eyelashes and pupils!
This is about 6.25" across and about an inch deep. There are a few paint imperfections: along his lip, his nose and on his toes; all are very insignificant and we feel add to his charm.
We have been told this may well be from the Victorian era, perhaps a decorative item that was peddled from door to door. It has no markings, logos or signatures on it (most were not marked) so it is difficult to know for certain. We acquired it from an estate sale of an antique dealer years ago.
We think this would be adorable in a baby's nursery or child's room.
