Here is a cool old chalk ware statue of Dopey, one of the beloved seven dwarfs from the story of Snow White.
Chalk-ware figurines were often the prizes won at carnivals and fairs in the 1920s through the 1960s; we estimate this little guy to be from the 1940s due to the colorway (red white and blue with yellow and black), and also keeping in mind the first full length animated film EVER, "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs" was released in 1937, when these Disney characters took on a life of their own.
This one is about 7" tall, and about 3.5" across.
He is solid rather than hollow (indicating older than younger), and standing and playing a big bass drum which says DOPEY along the bottom front.
He is painted in typical carnival style, bright and garish, and not too precise! We did NOT attempt to clean him since chalkware paint and finishes can be so fragile; we'll let his new owner decide to keep him with his vintage veneer, or try to polish him up.
Summer time is carnival, circus, amusement park and fair time ~ these chalk ware pieces bring back great memories of summer's past! and help to create a delightful story book character theme for a child's bedroom or playroom.
