This is a vintage 1940s wide lapeled trench style overcoat that was custom made with the initials R L embroidered on the inside, with J.B.Simpson Inc embroidered beneath it.
Inside the lining's breast pocket, there is another label that has the maker at the top, with the numbers 9004 and No. 11-888. It is marked "For R LATTIN" and is dated November 20, 1942.
The pockets are lined in cozy flannel, the back vent is buttoned, it has a snap-in quilted liner, and it has the double wide button wrist tabs that can adjust for size and comfort.
This is the same style of coat (wide lapel, double breasted, same double tab at the wrists) worn by James Dean for a couple of photo shoots, we've included one of those images below for you to see and compare.
Measurements of this coat are:
46.5" Long from center back of the neck to the hem
18.5" from shoulder point to shoulder point
7.25" from neck point to shoulder point
25" sleeve length
13" around the hem of the sleeves
41" at waist
46" at hip
This includes a self belt that is 2" wide, and 50" long from tip to buckle. The belt's BUCKLE is covered in leather which needs attention: either to be repaired, or replaced.
This has a belt carrier at each side seam.
Made of all wool gaberdine.
Please note, for the snap in liner: the snaps are set into cotton tape, not individually set. We did notice that there is one snap which has begun to pull away from the tape, so care must be used when snapping the lining in and out of the coat.
Condition: this is freshly dry-cleaned, it is sturdy and well made, and in superb condition with the only minor issues being the liner's snaps (as mentioned), and the leather covering on the belt buckle needs to be tacked down (and or glued and or sewn better) to secure it (or replace it), and we see a whisper of a sheen to the fabric.
