In 1947 Christian Dior introduced his New Look silhouette: curvy, with a tiny waistline and full, flared skirt; this beautiful black winter coat is made in that same silhouette with rich accents of velvet on the collar and turned up sleeve cuffs.
If you are fortunate enough to own some charming fit and flare dresses, this is the perfect winter coat for you, as the flared skirt of the coat allows room for the crinolines of your dress underneath.
There is no fiber label on this, but it is smooth, yet thick, and warm, and we can't help but think there's at least part cashmere in this. It is absolutely gorgeous, designed with 12 gores total in princess seaming, with 6 across the front and 6 across the back.
Measurements translate to a modern size 4 to 6 (these are the measurements of the coat itself, not the body that will be wearing it, and, remember to allow for a layer of clothes, besides):
Length from center back of the neck to the waist is 17"
Length from center back of the neck to the hem is 46.5"
Shoulder is 17" (with huge shoulder pads)
Sleeve length: 24"
Sweep of hem: 98"
Tailored by the House of Swansdown
and the Nat'l Recovery Board Coats & Suits
and a "This article Berlou Moth Proofed 5 years guarantee" label
The lining feels like silk.
This is in excellent condition except for a 1" mended area we found at the hem (please see photo); it is well done and disguised, we didn't find it until we were measuring for the sweep of the hem.
This is a true classic, collectible, yet absolutely wearable winter coat.
Freshly dry cleaned, and ready to wear.
This is heavy: it weighs 4# 5oz with no box, so shipping will reflect that.
