HERE’S A RARE SIGNED ORIGINAL VINTAGE MODERN MIDCENTURY 1960S OR 1970S ENAMEL-ON-COPPER PLAQUE DESIGNED BY MASSACHUSETTS ARTIST JUDITH DANER THAT DISPLAYS A SEASCAPE COMPRISED OF SEVEN (7) VIKING LONG-BOATS RENDERED IN ALTERNATING BLACK AND ORANGE ENAMELING SET AGAINST AN AVOCADO GREEN SEA AND A FULL ORANGE SUN SETTING ON THE HORIZON!
Please Note: According to available information about Judith Daner’s early activities as an enamel artist, she worked as a designer for both Bovano of Cheshire, Connecticut, and Robert Wuersch Associates of Fall River, Massachusetts. It is unknown whether Bovano or Wuersch created this particular example of Daner’s enamel art.
In any event, Daner employed the technique of stenciling for her design of this enamel plaque so that the various elements have a layered / 3-dimensional effect rendered in variations of orange, black, and avocado green enameling (or variations thereof). This took multiple firings to accomplish. The enamel plaque itself is mounted to simple walnut board frame with a white painted interior.
Measurements: The enamel plaque itself measures approximately eleven inches by eleven inches (11” X 11”). The overall dimensions of the walnut board frame is approximately twenty and one half inches (20 1/2) in height by eighteen and three eighths inches (18 3/8”) in width.
Signed: The enamel plaque is signed with Judith Daner’s initials “JD” located in the bottom right corner.
Condition: Good toward very good and clean condition. From outward appearances, this enamel plaque looks quite nice! HOWEVER, and please read, the enamel plaque has one cluster of craze-lines (like a spider web) located between the top orange long-boat and the next one down (a black long-boat). There is also a very small craze line located in the top left corner (barely visible). In addition, there are a few thin horizontal lines running across from side to side. These lines are actually on the surface of the copper and running underneath the translucent avocado green enameling. In other words, these lines are original to the making process. Lastly, the original walnut wood frame and the white-painted interior are in very good and clean condition with a few small markings here and there. And there is a little bit of white paint on the backside of the walnut wood frame.
Overall and regardless of the faults mentioned, this rare original vintage midcentury modern enamel-on-copper plaque is very presentable and still a visually-stunning knockout example of Judith Daner’s enamel art!
And Also Please Note: The cluster of craze lines as well as the horizontal lines described in the condition report are actually more difficult to see in normal ambient lighting. They show up more easily in the photographs shown above due to the use of flash photography.
