HERE’S A HIGHLY UNUSUAL ORIGINAL VINTAGE MODERN FRENCH CUBIST / ART DECO CLOISONNE ENAMEL-ON-COPPER PLAQUE DEPICTING PARIS NIGHTLIFE – WHICH INCLUDES: A CABARET DANCER ON STAGE AT “LA SOURCE” RESTAURANT WHERE SHE IS PERFORMING DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH A LARGE CANOPY THAT FACES THE STREET; AN OPEN-AIR CAFÉ IN FRONT OF “LA SOURCE” RESTRAUNT WITH CHAIRS AND TABLES WHERE TWO COUPLES ARE WATCHING SIX OTHER PEOPLE WHO THEMSELVES ARE WATCHING THE CABARET DANCER; TWO YOUNG WOMEN WALKING TOWARD US AT THE BOTTOM FOREGROUND; A YOUNG ROMANTIC COUPLE SECLUDED IN THEIR OWN ROOM FAR OFF IN THE BACKGROUND; AND A SIGN THAT READS “BYRRH” – WHICH WAS AN AROMATIZED WINE-BASED APERITIF MADE OF RED WINE, MISTELLE, AND QUININE, AND WAS POPULAR DURING THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY!
As you can see from the photographs shown above, both the subject matter and the aesthetic composition of this French cloisonné enamel-on-copper plaque display artistic ties to late 19th and early 20th century Post-Impressionism with clear references to work by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec (see “Au Moulin Rouge”) and Pablo Picasso (see “Le Moulin de la Galette”), Neo-Impressionism with clear references to work by Georges Seurat (see “Le Chahut”), and Cubism with references to work by Pablo Picasso (see “La Rue-des-Bois) and Georges Braque (see “Tour Eiffel”).
In addition, the reductive depiction of the Notre Dame de Paris in this artwork recalls the Metaphysical paintings of Giorgio de Chirico in which he portrayed buildings as imparting mystery and melancholy (see “Piazza D’Italia”).
Measures approximately six and three quarters inches (6 3/4”) in height by four and seven eighths inches (4 7/8”) in width, the artist who created this highly unusual example of cloisonné enamel art is unknown. There does not appear to be a signature. But it is most likely French in origin.
Condition: Very good toward excellent and clean condition and it has not been cleaned or messed with in any way. There is one small chip located on the backside top edge as well as some firing imperfections on the backside counter enameling. Overall, the front side with all of the glorious cloisonné imagery is in beautiful condition!
