Divie Bethune Duffield(1821-91) was a very prominent person in the city of Detroit Michigan...he graduated from Yale Law School, began practice in Detroit, I believe, in 1842..he was an active member in the establishment of the free common school system in Detroit and was President of the school board for a period of years...he was a civic leader, he was an accomplished scholar in ancient & modern language..there was a school & library (maybe more) in Detroit name in his honor ...he excelled as a lecturer and spoke at some very important events along with his poetry...he had a very active professional life, his poetry was spontaneous...his poetry appeared in various newspapers including Knickerbocker News of Albany, New York.. I was very impressed to learn that on April 27, 1864 he read his poem "Friend of the 24th" in honor of the presentation of new flags that were replacing the one damaged at Gettysburg...

this listing includes a collection of his original paperwork and his book of poems, Stray Songs of LIfe, copyright 1889, published by Anson Randolph & Co ...in the book, he wrote a presentation to his niece, dated it and signed himself as "Author"(see 3rd photo)..

included also with the book is a handwritten poem "to my boy" which is signed & dated 1860 (see 4th photo), this poem is in his book....the poem is written on both side, paper has been folded at one time, displays some wear, age toning..

in photo 5 is a handwritten personal letter to "George"..I'm thinking this may have been to his dad or son..there is a newspaper clipping attached to the letter of his poem "Earth Mother Love" published by the New York Evangelist...the letter is dated Dec, 1858 along with his initials...the letter is 2 pages, has been folded at one time, displays some wear, age toning...

the 6th photo is the announcement of his book by his publisher, the Anson D F Randolph & Co...it gives the cost of the book which has to be ordered...also gives examples of the book pages which can be seen on inside and back of announcement.....the announcement has been folded, has some wear and age toning

photo 7 is a handwritten poem, "the Maid of Chamouni"..it is not signed or dated that I could see..this poem also appears in his book...the poem is written on both sides of paper, paper has been fold, some wear age toning and a short tear..

photo 8 displaying 2 photos of a lady, maybe his wife, not sure, they are very old and have a discoloration to them...also a picture of himself which I'm not sure of its age...

Condition of book: the hard back cover of the book has wear, soiling, corner bumps, the top board has a split from spine which runs down from top 2 1/2"..also appears that a split to spine material has been repaired, shelf wear to top & bottom spine..spine is strong, all pages attached...book is complete, contains 257 pages...interior pages are nice, some age toning, probably a finger smudge & light soiling here & there, no tears or creasing noted.....book measures 8 1/2" X 6"...

there is also a satin bookmark which is included....

I haven't been able to find Mr Duffields signature or original work other than what I have...this collection would make a great addition to your collection..
