This is an extremely rare, Chalkboard and erasure, penny, pin brooch; folk art, DIY, jewelry of the 1940s.
Measurements: When closed: 1-7/8 inches x 2-1/2 inches. Open it is 4-3/4 x 2-1/2 inches.
Hand made (perhaps from a mail order kit) the felt brooch has the image of a chalkboard on the front. Drawn in white are: musical notes, " I LOVE YOU!" , the face of a little girl and, a Tic Tac Toe game.
The black felt is attached to creme colored felt. It is whip stitched with an accent in red thread. A tiny erasure dangles from inside.
The inside is machine stitched and forms a pocket to hold pennies. There is a metal snap closure inside. On the back is a silver metal safety pin for attaching to your lapel. This is a common safety pin and has some rust. There is no rust on the felt.
Very clean and so charming! I have a similar one that belonged to my older sister. She was given 5 or 6 pennies, safely tucked into the pouch and allowed to "go shopping" at the candy store back in the 1940s, right after WWII.
Someone needs to write a book on children's jewelry!
