Huge porcelain brooch with hand painted angel / cherub from the Victorian era of the Grand-Tour. It measures: 3-1/2 inches X 2-3/4 inches. It is very large and fills my had. Big! It would be an amazing for a collector of cherubs, porcelain portraits or true Victorian jewelry.
On sale for just a few days.
Oval porcelain is hand painted with the image of a putti taken from Raphael's Sistine Madonna. This is not a decal. The artist's work is excellent. Very detailed work with soft background. It is unsigned.
The unglazed back is impressed with the number 15 and part of the letter "L". The white porcelain was a BLANK artists used for any number of subjects.
Roses and beautiful ladies were always popular. I have seen a number of those but never a Raphael angel and never in this size!
From the Victorian era is was likely purchased as a souvenir, on a Grand Tour of Europe.
Frame is all brass. Twisted rope style frame with prongs is brass. Hinged pin mechanism and simple "C" clasp is also brass.
Condition is excellent. There are no cracks or chips. Color is wonderful and the frame is entirely intact with a working pin mechanism.
*pictures are GREATLY ENLARGED. Some pictures show the brooch magnified up to 10 times.
Note: There is a scratch on the front that goes across the mouth and down the top hand. Another goes across the lower hand. These are visible with a jewelers loupe and are on the surface; not affecting the porcelain. I do not find them so visible without a loupe. Highly magnified pictures given. The scratch is also magnified,
Detailed pictures provided. The unglazed back has a dark dot.
