Rare Antique Cotton Crazy Quilt 1870 - 1890 Textile Art. Measurements: 95 inches x 95 inches. Squares are 12 inches x 12 inches. This is a very large quilt. Whoever made it just kept on quilting and adding pieces. All old and all original.
This is a very rare, extra large, antique, all cotton crazy quilt circa 1870 an amazing work of textile art. Stunning. It is all original and unaltered.
These fabrics are an amazing panorama of textiles of the mid Victorian Era. I counted over 130 DIFFERENT examples of prints and, I only counted 6 of the squares.
These are brilliant, fabulous, amazing fabrics. The quilt is stunning, one of a kind. The colors are vibrant. The prints are exquisite. I have specialized in textiles for over 30 years. I have never had such a wonderful example of antique fabrics in a quilt.
There is a lot of the antique Turkey Red and it is completely intact. The same for the black on white and white on black prints. No running or bleeding of color to the front.
The artist (s) who pieced this quilt hoarded every remnant and scrap of fabric that came their way. They are pieced with careful, strong stitches. The squares are backed with off white cotton. Some of the backing pieces also show areas of having been pieced.
I found signatures: the number 2 and Redding ( that is one ) and the other is the number, 1 and some initials that I can't quite make out. ( that is the second.) I draw the conclusion that there were at least two people working on this quilt.
MOST of the quilt is hand pieced. The back shows some machine work. It took hundreds of hours to collect, piece, and quilt this work of art.
The quilt was folded with the backing on the OUTSIDE and stored in a trunk. This has resulted in the backing having OVERALL discoloration and uneven color. The entire backing is spotted.
The front is near mint. Fabric pieces are strong with vibrant colors. Stitching also strong with no separation.
I found 5 or 6 places where the discoloration has affected the front. These are small random spots. I found 4 small areas where the cotton on the front has separated.
Please see all the pictures and understand the BACK is discolored. The front is near mint.
From the estate of a mother and daughter who collected textiles of all kinds. The collection spans over 100 years of fabrics, lace, trims, ribbons, household linens and much more.
