Rare antique Sunbonnet Babies pyrography / wood burning Pencil box circa 1900 in mint condition. ORIGINAL and so darling. I do not use the word rare lightly. This is a new/old item; never used. Popular gifts at Christmas, birthdays and to commemorate special events; these old boxes are just wonderful.
A very rare item from a personal collection of pyrography. I have never seen a Sunbonnet Baby pencil box before. Lots of Sunbonnet baby items like quilts out there but, nothing like this. It is also a true antique.
8 inches long x 2 inches deep x 1/5/8 inches high. There is a quarter in some of the pictures for size perspective as well.
This is pyrograph / pyrography / heat embossed image work on wood.
The Sunbonnet Babies book was illustrated by Bertha Corbet in 1900. An immediate success, the illustrations appeared on everything from dishes to quilts to post cards.
This is a special piece. The highlight of a number of collecting genres; Sunbonnet babies, folk art, pyrography, school / teaching collectibles. Circa 1900 it is the perfect gift for anyone of these collecting areas.
The lidded, hinged box has decoration on every side save the bottom. The top and the INSIDE of the top have Sunbonnet babies at either end. One set of babies is kissing the other baby is skipping rope. Between them is a cluster of pencils held by a ribbon and accented with flowers.
The front and back have a garland of ribbon, roses and leaves. Each end has a rosebud. The original brass WIZARD hinges are in place and work perfectly. Tiny nails are also used in the precise construction of this box.
The BOTTOM is not decorated. There is an endearment written in pencil: " For Vernaid or Vernald(sp)? from Grandmother, Brother and Aunt Kit."
The bottom has ink stamping from the original old box that was used to make the box. A great sign of authenticity and age! Old shipping boxes were used by folks to make these unique, American Folk Art pieces. This box is in minty, original condition.
This little box was perhaps a birthday or Christmas present. CAREFULLY treasured. It does not look as if it was ever used.
It is a wonderful example of early American folk art made during the late Victorian era. If lightly rubbed with linseed oil the images would be more distinct. I leave that to the new owner.
Note: For those new to this collecting genre, pyrography is the process or art of producing designs on wood, leather, or other materials by using heated tools. It is wonderful American folk art; first cousin to tramp art.
