Black Beaded Suit Jacket Dutch Couturier Modehuis De Vos. Literally translated is Fashionable Clothing by the Fox. This jacket is a bespoke piece; a one of a kind made especially for a client. That is: This is a couturier piece, but different than Haute couturier. Let me know if you have questions about the difference. The jacket is circa 1960.
Measurements in inches, Bust 34, waist 26, across bottom 36 hemline, upper bank 15-1/2, sleeve from shoulder to cuff 23, ( the sleeve could be turned up on the inside from 1 to 1-1/2 inches. The length from center back to hem 22 inches.
Extremely fine, soft, black wool outer and superb quality black satin lining. Note: this piece was built from start to finish by hand. Details in such pieces are often hidden in the cut of the cloth such as: triple darts at front waist, set in front yokes in an inverted "V". Collar front section and front of the jacket are cut as one. Only a skilled cutter would be able to achieve this.
There are very deep self fabric facings. The satin lining is pleat darted inside. It is fit to the under lining, in a way that only hand construction could achieve. Set in sleeves have underlining at the shoulder top for an extra sense of body without extreme weight.
The decorated a/o beaded areas are: inset black velvet teardrops with a single bi-cone black jet bead in the center. Tear drops are edged with black soutache or a hand stitched frame. Arcs of jet beads are at the side of each tear drop.
Below are a woven ribbon design. The black silk ribbon has a delicate weave of it's own. Black jet beads embellish each of these basket weave pieces.
Button holes are couture finished. Gray Mother of Pearl buttons are invisibly attached. Finish stitches are expertly hand done. The embroidered label reads: Rotterdam, Modehuis de Vos, DEN HAAG SCHEVENGEN. The first and last part of the label are the location of the shop.
Note: this is a very tailored piece. Measurements could be adjusted slightly by moving the buttons; but no more than an inch or so. NOTE: the sleeves seem to be 1 inch longer than usual. The client for whom this was built apparently had long arms. This could be remedied by turning them up from the inside.
Condition is above excellent. There are no holes, stains, wear marks to the fabric, signs of significant wear or odor. The fabric is strong with vivid color.
Note: I believe 4 or 5 of the small beads are missing. The inside, under arm seam of one sleeve has loose stitching showing the basting stitches. Easy and quick fix to accomplish by hand.
