Russian Pantokrator Orthodox Icon late 19th/20th Century
A beautifully patinated icon painted in tempera and gold on to a thick oak riven panel. Russian icons are typically small and painted on wood.
Classically constructed by carving out the inner area to create a raised integral frame. The panel is then coated in gesso and the image painted using egg tempera before being sealed with linseed oil.
Christ is shown half length with the right hand raised in blessing, his fingers forming the christogram ICXC for Jesus Christ. The left hand is holding the gospels. The halo is flanked with Cyrillic script. which probably reads, “He Who Is” “Jesus Christ”
Condition
The image has many losses and has age associated wear, but is stable.
