Marie Joséphine NICOLAS (1845-1903)

A fabulous Belle Époque period portrait of a society woman of quality resplendent in a pair of pince-nez, a style of spectacle popular in the late 19th century.
Marie Joséphine Nicolas, also known as Marie Drapier, was born in Villers-Cotterêts, Aisne, France. She was a pupil of Levasseur and Charles Joshua Chaplin and is celebrated for her portraits. She first showed work at the Paris Salon in 1867 and in 1882 her portrait of Father Ricard was included in the book “Women Painters of the World”.

Condition
In good sound original condition. Minor craquelure in places. The frame has woodworm which has been treated.
