French School c1740 Portrait of a Gentleman Oil Painting - image 1 of 13

Circle of Jean Francois Delyen (1684- 1761)
Portrait of a French Gentleman c 1740

An imposing portrait of a French gentleman of quality resplendent in his finery and holding a snuffbox. The snuffbox signifies friendship and affability. Unsigned, presented in a delightful timeworn frame, probably the original. A yellow label written in French attributes the painting to Delyen. This information could be written on the original canvas which has now been covered by a new lining.

Condition
In common with most paintings of this period it has not escaped the attention of previous restorers. The canvas has been lined in recent years. There is woodworm to the frame and strainer which has been treated. There is a bruise to the canvas just above his head see image. Various signs of old overpainting.
This is a dark painting and requires adequate lighting to fully appreciate.
