French School c1680 Nativity Oil on Canvas The Ultimate Christmas Decoration

An unusual painting in oil on canvas laid on to panel dating to the late 1600s. Possibly the first of a set of paintings depicting the life of Christ and produced for personal devotional purposes. There are the remains of an old label on the panel verso relating to a 19th century framer/restorer in Toulouse.

Provenance
Purchased at auction in Pau, France as a 17th century work, copy of invoice available to purchaser.

Condition
Old score marks across the canvas. May benefit from a clean. Woodworm to the backboard which has been treated. Repairs to corners in particular the bottom right. Minor chips and age associated wear, see images.
