Raymond BESSE (1899-1969)
St Ouen (Soir)
A brooding atmospheric street scene typical of the work of Raymond Besse. He painted mostly the blue collar districts of Paris especially in the northern areas of Saint-Ouen, Montmartre, Clichy and around the Canal Saint-Marin. His work is in stark contrast to the idyllic work of some of his contemporaries such as Edouard Cortez or Galien-Laloue. He also produced numerous works on the themes of Normandy and the Loire Valley.
Besse first exhibited in the Salon des Salon de Independants in 1923. He continued to exhibit throughout his life including at the Salon d’Automne.
