Sydney CARTER (1874-1945)
Children in an Orchard 1896

A charming painting of children, possibly the artist’s siblings, playing in the dabbled light under a tree. Often trees took centre stage in Carter’s paintings and he was particularly good at painting them. Signed, dated, painted on to wooden panel and with another composition verso. The painting on the reverse resembles the artist’s father.

At a very early age, Carter showed a great aptitude for drawing and painting and his father the artist Richard Carter encouraged this gift. At the age of fifteen, he was sent to study at the Walthamstow School of Art, followed by the Royal Academy. When just 20 he had the distinction of having a picture hung at the Royal Academy. In the year 1898, he won the highest award for landscape, the Gilbert Garrett Prize, in competition with all the London sketch clubs. In later life he emigrated to South Africa for health reasons. His work can be found in many collections including the Royal Albert Memorial Museum.
