Alfred MONTAGUE, R.B.A. British (1832-1883)
Windmills near Delft

A charming moonlit landscape depicting a pair of mills silhouetted against the night sky by Alfred Montague. Signed with initials and inscribed under the tondo mount “AM, mills near Delft”. Painted on to artist’s mill board, the painting can be dated reasonably accurately to 1860 by means of an art suppliers label Charles Roberson & Co London.

Alfred Montague was a painter of landscapes, town views and coastal scenes. Many of his works are coastal scenes painted in northern France, Holland and Belgium. He is listed as having lived in Birmingham and London.
Montague exhibited successfully during his career, most prominently from 1836 through to 1870. These venues included the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.
He was elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
