Jo COAT (1897-1969) French Post Impressionist
Breton Gite 1956

A delightful post impressionist painting of a Brittany farmyard by Jo Coat. Painted with his characteristic heavy impasto, bold brushwork, colourful palette and presented in a stylish carved frame.
Coat remained in Brittany his entire life and took his inspiration from the local countryside and coastal areas. There are remains of his artist’s label verso which should read “Jo Coat, 4 Rue Duguay-Trouin Douarnenez. He was professor of drawing at the Lycée de Douarnenez, a place that inspired many painters.
