Emmanuel Michel BENNER (1873-1965)
A delightful painting of a young woman in a classical pose by Many Benner. Signed verso and inscribed in brackets “Capri.” The painting dates to around 1903 when he won a scholarship to travel and is presented in a stylish carved frame.
Benner came from a family of distinguished painters. At the age of 16 he was admitted to Ecole des Beaux Arts where he studied under Lefebvre, Henner and Constant. Henner’s sfumato technique is particularly apparent in this painting. Sfumato is the blending of tones and colours to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms.
He was runner up in the Prix de Rome and won medals at the Salons of 1902 and 1905.
In excellent condition. Frame a little time worn.
