Danish School c1775 Portrait of a Gentleman.
An imposing portrait of a Danish gentleman dating to the last quarter of the 18th century. This dapper gentleman wears a blue coat trimmed with fur, stylish embroidered waistcoat, and the ensemble is topped off with a powdered grey wig.
This could be a portrait of Johan Frederik Classen (1725-1792), who was a Danish-Norwegian industrialist, major general, landowner and founder of Det Classenske Fideicommis. There is a strong resemblance both sharing a very distinctive nose.
From a Danish manor house.
The painting is on its original canvas. There is heavy craquelure to the paint surface and two repairs to the canvas. Retouching to the background area. Presented in a modern frame.
