Circle of Sir Peter LELY (1618-1680)
An elegant portrait of a Stuart beauty dating to c1680. The painting has a label verso and some remarks from the French experts “Cabinet Turquin” The remarks, in French, ascribe the painting to English school, about 1680, circle of Sir Peter Lely. There is also mention of some old repairs.
Lely was the dominant portrait painter of this era and his influence pervaded long after his death in 1680.
The canvas has been lined and mounted on a new stretcher. There is craquelure to the paint surface and some minor touching up. The frame is modern but in keeping with the portrait.
