Fine quality antique needlepoint tapestry with a Scottish scene. A charming young girl in a kilt and plaid (the proper name for the belted blanket wrap) sits gazing in the distance with 2 dogs by her side. The dog on the right is a King Charles Cavalier spaniel, he is sitting on his hind legs begging and trying to get her attention. Another spaniel or setter on her left is cuddled under her arm. The lovely lass is surrounded by roses with a tree on her right. Balmoral Castle, Queen Victoria's favorite castle is seen in the background. The image is believed to be Victoria, Princess Royal, Queen Victoria's daughter. The King Charles Cavalier Spaniel is modeled after Dash, Queen Victoria's beloved childhood dog.
The colors are lovely, clean and bright. The needlework is exquisite - obviously done by one adept at handwork. The girl's face, particularly her profile, lips, eye and hair are brilliantly done. Her beautiful highland dress, socks and shoes and the fur coats of the dogs are simply superb. It is framed in a walnut frame (it appears to be original) with heavy glass.
