Antique 19th-Century rare English mahogany cheese coaster with scrolled handles. It was originally used to hold and serve a large half Stilton cheese wheel. It is nice and big - a real show piece. We estimate the age to be early to mid 19th-Century.. It is a rare find and perfect for a collector of fine English antiques. It's only the second cheese coaster we've seen available for sale (and that we could even afford to purchase) in many years of buying antiques.
These fabulous coasters were used in aristocratic homes in the 18th and 19th-Century. Cheese was served daily and the coaster would be placed in the center of the table for everyone to tuck in and enjoy. Ones with castors would be rolled up and down, those with a flat bottom, like this one would have baize on the base and be pushed along. They are exceptionally rare as the wood had to be steam bent and shaped. Most have cracked and damaged by age and use. Certainly today they can be used as intended, they are functional. They are also lovely lined with a napkin and filled with fruit or decorative objects.
