Circa 1910, English Edwardian table gong with original striker. It has horns with silver mounts that hold the gong on an oak plinth base. When struck with the striker, it makes a lovely melodious sound. Gongs were traditionally used in the homes of wealthy aristocrats in Victorian and Edwardian England to announce the hour to dress for dinner, then summon the family and guests to dinner. These lovely antique gongs have made quite a comeback recently,courtesy of Downton Abbey! Why shout 'dinner's ready' when you can strike this superb gong to announce the meal!
