Tantalus, the mortal son of Zeus and Pluto was committed to the underworld for angering the gods. His punishment was to stand knee deep in water with fruit growing above him. Whenever he tried to eat or drink, the fruit and water withdrew from reach. From Tantalus, we get the verb, 'tantalize'.
