A 19th-Century English hand made games box. The interior is a backgammon board, the exterior, chess or checkers and Nine Men Morris (a strategy game dating back to the Roman Empire) game boards. The game box comes with the 32 chess pieces included. It is made of walnut and ebony wood and is quite heavy. It is one of the most interesting boxes we have seen. The hinges are engraved, as is the brass plate on the front of the box.
Dimensions: 15.5"L x 15.5"W x 4.5" H; Open, 15.5"W x 31"L.
Condition: Very good, it has some age shrinkage and wear. As shown in the photos, the chess and checkers game is slightly uneven due to age shrinkage, but it is fine for playing the game. It is what one sees on an antique piece and authenticates age.
