This circa 1900 German novelty is in perfect working order and in extremely fine condition. It's a hard to find piece that was called "Dissolving Views" when it was sold between 1890 - 1915. It's made of brass, steel, spring steel and leather for the plunger seal. To use it, one would take the cap off and push the plunger down to cock it. Then it is filled with water and the cap replaced. The fun begins when someone is told to look in the tiny scope at the top to see a nude or risque photo, in this case a circa 1900 bathing beauty. Once seeing the photo, they are then instructed to turn the wheel on the side to see another photo. Instantly, all of the water inside squirts out a tiny imperceptible hole which is located just below the stanhope scope and floods the innocent victims eye with a powerful stream of water.
The stanhope viewer in this item shows a woman on a rocky beach and would have been considered sexy at the time. It is very clear and easy to see. This item is quite rare, especially in this very fine condition.
