This is a beautiful and well maintained gold-plated pressed binocular charm. Both the charm and the stanhope images inside are in nice condition. Binoculars like these were often used as pocket watch fobs, necklace pendants and charms, or as a Victorian Era doll accessory. This charm may have been worn at some time but it is in well kept condition. The binoculars resemble opera glasses made in the French style. Produced circa 1895-1900 the charm was made in 2 halves that have been soldered together and plated with a rose gold alloy. It is adorned and ornamented with a period carved scroll design. These binoculars are much less common and more decorative than the traditional turned bone type. One of the stanhopes shows the Incline Railway at Lookout Mountain TN and the other stanhope depicts the Incline Railway at Mauch Chunk, PA. Interestingly, Mauch Chunk no longer exists as it was renamed Jim Thorpe, PA in 1954.
