This antique stanhope Civil War commemorative bullet depicts 5 views of Gettysburg, PA. After the war, some of the left over bullets were used to make these stanhope souvenirs. Most common are bullets of the .56-58 cal. sort, and this one is a .56cal. The main title is GETTYSBURG, PA. The images are clear and easy to see but the images at the top left are a bit lighter in contrast. This is not an uncommon characteristic for a stanhope. The 5 images found within are separately titled:
GENERAL LEE'S HEADQUARTERS
SOLDIERS NATIONAL CEMETERY
SOLDIERS MT IN NATIONAL CEMETERY
VIRGINIA STATE MEMORIAL
Stanhope bullets were made shortly after the Civil War when Gettysburg instantly became a popular town that has survived since from tourism. The bullets were gathered up from the battlefield and surrounding areas and stanhope lenses (complete with a variety of images) were ordered from a French manufacturer. The lenses were then locally installed by sutlers and tourist shops who often employed those disabled during the battle. This artifact is original and our restoration included only removal & cleaning of the lens. This is an excellent example of a rare stanhope civil war bullet souvenir item. Great for civil war collectors and enthusiasts or anyone just interested in owning a wonderful piece of American History.
