This is a striking woodblock work by Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989). It is titled, "The Dark Cherub" and is from the artist's series that illustrates The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. The series was originally commissioned by the Italian government and was to consist of 101 watercolors. Eventually, however, the project was cancelled but fortunately French publisher Joseph Foret stepped in and published the works as woodblock engravings.
This work measures 12" x 9.5" sight size and is signed lower right and inscribed "E A" (French abbreviation for "artist's proof") lower left. Condition appears to be quite good although there is minor foxing starting to appear on the mat. I do not see any foxing on the engraving itself, however. The frame is a fairly simple wooded frame and while modest,is certainly serviceable. Framed, the work measures 18.25" x 16.25". The work was originally purchase at a gallery in Boston about 30 years ago and has been in a single collection since then.
