Jazz up your cocktail hour with this set of 8 Siesta Ware frosted tiki bar highball glasses straight from the Rat Pack era! Siesta Ware was trademarked in 1963 by the Benner Glass Company and featured distinctive mahogany veneer wraps held in place by hand-applied metal bands. The veneer wraps were in turn decorated with Tiki designs such as whimsical fish, a pineapple, a drum and spear, and even an outrigger canoe. The glass was utilitarian and as such, most Siesta Ware glasses will have the occasional straw mark on the bottom or around the base. The Banner Glass company was based in Jacksonville, Florida although they eventually added a production facility in Los Angeles as well. Dexter Benner, the founder, died in 2007.
This is a particularly nice set in that there is a good variety of color, an even number of glasses, and enough glasses for a nice pool-side party. There are no chips or cracks, although in some cases there is fading of the designs commensurate with age and use. Many of the wood wraps have some vertical cracking. There seems to be some debate as to whether these were in the making or happened later with shrinkage of the wood; I suspect it was a combination of both. Each glass is marked "Siesta Ware" on the bottom and holds 10 ounces. They stand 6.5" high and the max diameter at the base is 2.5". This set is guaranteed to make your next Tiki party a memorable one!
