This is a delightful Edwardian postcard album for sale. Dated "Christmas 1903" and dedicated "To Cissy from Harry", it is from the estate of prominent British painter Frederick Whitehead (1853-1938). The album contains 203 postcards ranging from pre-1910 to the 1930's. There is a broad range of subject matter, including military, geographical, and cultural. The military cards are mostly pre-WWI naval, including a card depicting the H.M.S. Victorious. The cultural cards include a number of humorous ones plus some featuring celebrities of the day. While the condition of the album is fair at best, the cards are largely in good to excellent condition. Some were through the postal system and have writing on them but others do not. Please see the images for an idea as to content.
A key feature about this album is that it is designed to allow the postcards to be added and removed easily. None of the cards are glued down and thus can be removed as desired. Overall, this a wonderful window into the first few decades of 20th century Great Britain.
Also included is a souvenir publication celebrating the Royal Jubilee that was apparently a supplement to the Weldon's Ladies' Journal of April, 1935. Included too is a a Sketch magazine from December, 1934. This is titled a "Wedding Number" and celebrates the marriage of Princess Marina of Greece to the Duke of Kent. Both magazines are in good condition and offer a nice insight into fashion and culture of the times. The Royal Jubilee publication is especially noteworthy because it celebrates "Women's Part in a Great Historic Period" and includes a photo of the famous suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst getting hauled off (literally) by a copper.
The album measures 16" x 10" and the magazines measure 11" x 8.25 for the Jubilee and 12.5" x 9.5" for the Sketch. Thank you for viewing and please contact us if you need additional information or images.
